General Overview (history) of the organization
The Church of the Redeemer, constructed in 1905, was named the Pro Cathedral for the Anglican Diocese of Calgary. The designation "Pro" meant that the church would serve as a temporary Cathedral until a more elaborate structure could be built. By 1949, after going through the Great Depression and the second World War, it became apparent that the dream of a larger Cathedral was not realistic. The term Pro was dropped, and the Church of the Redeemer was named the Cathedral for the Diocese. For many years, the Church was fondly referred to as "the Pro" and the ProArts Society's name reflects that affectionate term, and our affirmation of the positive role the arts play in our community.
