HYMM combines traditional melodies from around the world with modern compositions to create music that appeals to a wide audience. Based in Calgary, these musicians come from diverse backgrounds (Iran, Syria, Turkey, East of Europe, Chile, and Quebec.), with influences from jazz, blues, Klezmer, and Western pop music. The group features the sound of the traditional Iranian Santur, traditional Kurdish Turkish Saz, and the Arabic Oud, combined with violin, electric bass, Latin Guitar, clarinet, saxophone, percussion, and vocals.
The group was founded in November 2015 by Bijan Maysami and Irfan Aydoğdu.
Current members are Bijan Maysami (Santur, Persian Hammer Dulcimer), Irfan Aydoğdu (Saz player and vocals) Aya Mhana (Oud, vocals), Frank Rackow (clarinet, sax, and vocals), Greg Goldenberg (electric bass), Paya Salem (violin), Jaime Calderon(guitar) Anastasia Alexander (Flamenco Dancer), and Yenny Farias (Percussion).
