The Guzheng, also known as the Chinese Zither, is a traditional Chinese stringed instrument that has a history of more than 2000 years. Over the centuries it has evolved from a 7 stringed instrument to 21 and is played by plucking the strings with picks that are attached to the fingers. It is tuned to a pentatonic scale but players are able to play all the intervals by changing the tension of the strings.
We are excited to share the beautiful melodies of the Guzheng with a repertoire filled with unique arrangements of pieces ranging from the familiar to beloved Chinese classics with everyone.
Our program consists of different styles and genres to show the Guzheng’s range of capabilities that transcends time and captivate the listener. “Butterfly Lovers”, a piece that tells the tragic tale of two ill- fated lovers will showcase the Guzheng’s story telling ability. “Fishermens’ Song at Eventide”, is a well-known traditional piece that paints the picture of fishermen returning home after a long day of fishing. Moreover, “Battle of Typhoon”, a more modern piece, will display the Guzheng’s ability to transport the listener through time and evoke a variety of emotions. We look forward to sharing the beautiful sounds of the Guzheng with you.
