The ProArts@Noon Concert Series is pleased to announce a unique series of five emerging artist concerts featuring Calgary performing artists.

The Nickle Family Foundation recently awarded Calgary’s ProArts Society funding to undertake the Emerging Artist Concert Series, featuring a diverse selection of artistic genres. This special series will be part of the ProArts@Noon weekly schedule of Wednesday concerts.

Now in its thirteenth season, the ProArts@Noon Concert Series is a free, noon hour concert series presented by the ProArts Society who rent the historic Cathedral Church in the heart of Calgary’s Cultural District for their weekly concerts.

Nickle Family Foundation Emerging Artist Series 2015

The Series begins on Wed. March 11 with local violinist Edward Powell leading a trio featuring Edward and Lev Nesterov on violins with Osmond Chiu in a classical string concert that will feature an exhilarating program of rarely-performed late Romantic and 20th-Century Russian and Hungarian works.

May 27, 2015 | Phoebe Powell, classical harp

Phoebe Powell is an accomplished harpist with multiple Royal Conservatory and Calgary Kiwanis Music Festival awards to her name. She was one of only two Canadian harpists selected to perform in Master Classes at the prestigious World Harp Congress in Vancouver in July 2011 (Benjamin Britten’s Ceremony of Carols), and also joined the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra in October that same year. She is a long-standing member the Calgary Youth Orchestra and a senior chamber ensemble student with the Amici String Programme. As a winner of the 2012 Calgary C3 Concerto competition Phoebe performed Debussy’s Danses sacrees et profanes for harp and string orchestra at Calgary’s Jack Singer Hall with the Calgary Civic Orchestra.

July 01, 2015 | Jesse Plessis, classical piano

Jesse Plessis is currently working towards a master of music degree in piano performance with Megumi Masaki at Brandon University. In his bachelor of music degree he studied piano performance at the University of Lethbridge. Plessis has been awarded prizes both in piano and composition, most recently by the Associated Manitoba Arts Festivals, the Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg, and the Canadian Music Centre Prairie Region Emerging Composers Competition. He has performed with the Land’s End Chamber Ensemble, the International Piano Ensemble, the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra, and has made several appearances on CBC Radio.

August 12, 2015 | Joel Balzun, tenor

Baritone and composer Joel Balzun is establishing himself as a mature new voice in the future of music. His multi-faceted career has led him to work with some of the world’s most respected musicians and ensembles.  As a composer, Joel’ s “haunting and beautiful” music has received international recognition , including being a prize-winner in the National Broadcast Orchestra’s Galaxie Rising Star Composers’ Competition, winning both the Young Composers Prize and the Grand Prize.

Joel is currently pursuing a Master’s of Music Degree in Vocal Performance and Literature at the prestigious Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY.

November 04, 2015 | Tracy Cumberbatch, flamenco dance

Flamenco Dance Artist Tracy Cumberbatch has become an ardent advocate for Flamenco wherever her travels take her. From performing with local Flamenco artists at various events and festivals in Calgary, to producing showcase concerts within the community with local talent to studying with Flamenco legends in Spain and across North America she is happy to be able to share Spain’s passionate art form with you. Tracy is also honored to be the recipient of the prestigious Cristina Heeren Foundation Flamenco Dance scholarship.
