Quarter Notes Handbell Ensemble was founded in 2009 by Artistic Director Emmy Okazawa-Bortolin and original members included Peter Bortolin, Ritu Gurjar and Anne Hergott. Although only together for a short time, they boasted a combined total of over 70 years ringing experience!
For the 2011-12 season, Anne Hergott left the ensemble and currently Quarter Notes is performing as a trio.
Quarter Notes performs on 4 octaves of Malmark handbells using a variety of small ensemble ringing techniques including solo weaving and four-in-hand (two bells in each hand). What makes this small ensemble unique is that these 49 bells are normally rung by 11 or 12 pairs of hands in a typical choir!
A challenging repertoire of wide variety ranging from well known Christmas carols through baroque and classical all the way to spirituals, Latin and ragtime makes up this ensembles offerings. Quarter Notes continues to raise the bar through it’s creativity and technique by transforming handbell ringing into a true delight for the eyes as well as the ears!
