T.A.L.E.S. is the acronym for The Alberta League Encouraging Storytelling

The title of this concert is APPLES FROM HEAVEN and will feature storytellers Calum Lykan and Karen Gummo who will collaborate and improvise with Red Deer composer/pianist Cheryl Cooney.  

Featured tales are:

The Theft of Idun’s Apples a Viking Myth that tangles with immortality. It is a saga of mystery and mischief all about the beautiful and terrible process of aging.  Celtic Storyteller Calum Lykan (who is fresh from Scotland) will be joining veteran Calgary storyteller Karen Gummo to improvise with composer and pianist Cheryl Cooney – giving new light to old tales.

The Beautiful Heart – a tale gathered in an Edinburgh shop.

These tales of transformation will be given new life with the power of the piano and the loving listening ears of an improvising composer.

Storyteller and visual artist Karen Gummo has been a lover of story for all of her days. Since 1986 she has been sharing favourite tales with willing audiences. Her Danish and Icelandic Heritage provide her with countless sagas of the Vikings and of the humble folk of Scandinavia. Friends and family members have been generous too in sharing tales of their adventures and so Karen continues to honour and to hone those remarkable stories. Of late Karen has been performing in schools with the Young Alberta Book Society,  at Lougheed House, and in the Olympic Plaza where she shared stories of Lady Isabella Lougheed.  Her String Story workshops are popular with all ages. In the spring of 2017, Karen will tour Ontario with the Canadian Children’s Book Centre Book Week.

Calum Lykan is a passionate and energetic Storyteller who has travelled extensively telling stories, meeting new tellers and learning new tales on his journey’s. He loves entertaining and takes every opportunity to connect his audiences to the wonderful worlds of myth, legend, folklore, fables, and historical stories from Scotland and Far Away Lands. As a professional and experienced Storyteller and Tour guide, Calum can provide you with a quality storytelling or tour experience.
