Organist Tim Pyper is a doctoral candidate at Cornell University where he studies with Annette Richards and David Yearsley. His dissertation research focuses on the performance practice of early 20th-century English organ music. Prior to enrolling at Cornell, Tim received his B.M., M.M. and Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music as a student of David Higgs. Other significant organ teachers have included Giles Bryant, Jack Mitchener, John Tuttle and William Porter (improvisation). His piano training with Barbara Lister-Sink forms the basis of his technical approach to all keyboard instruments.
An accomplished performer, Tim has won First Prize in numerous regional and national competitions including the Arthur Poister Memorial Competition (2008), the John Rodland Memorial Competition (2002), the A.G.O./Quimby Region II Competition (2001) and the Royal Canadian College of Organists’ National Competition (2001). In 2002, Tim performed at the A.G.O. Convention in Philadelphia as part of the “Rising Stars” series. Later the same year, he was a featured performer at the R.C.C.O National Convention. His solo recitals have been broadcast by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and by National Public Radio’s Pipedreams.
Effective September, 2010, Tim will serve as Director of Music at the Cathedral Church of the Redeemer, Calgary. Tim’s other appointments have included tenures as Assistant Organist at St. James’ Cathedral, Toronto, Organist of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Rochester and Organist & Choirmaster of the Church of the Ascension (Episcopal), Rochester. He holds the Associate diploma from the American Guild of Organists.
