Collegium Musicum is dedicated to exploring music from the baroque period and earlier. Each term has a particular area of focus, and students are exposed to as much repertoire as possible while also looking at performance practice issues and historical context. Director, Julie Harris, holds a Master of Music degree from the University of Calgary and an Artist Diploma from the University of Toronto. She has also studied early music at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, The Netherlands. Upon returning to Calgary in 1999, she created and runs the Early Music Voices Concert Series. As well as being a member of Calgary’s VoiceScapes, she is also half of Duo Seraphim with Toronto-based soprano Katherine Hill.
“Come and experience vocal music of the 16th and 17th centuries. Some of this music was written for courts and chapels, some for private chambers and social gatherings. El grillo by Josquin Deprez has the ensemble of singers imitating the sounds of a cricket while alluding to thoughts of love. In John Dowland’s Come again, sweet Love doth now invite, cupids arrows have caused unalterable wounds. We will also have sacred music by Byrd and Purcell and some charming pieces from the Spanish New World.”
This concert is the third in a series of seven Choral Concerts during 2019 generously sponsored by:
