Impasto Duo

Impasto Duo is named after the impasto painting technique, a style applying rich texture, variety, and colour to the canvas. Striving to bring this artistic vivacity to its performances, Impasto Duo is excited to commence its fourth year of flute and piano music. Always aiming for excellence, Impasto Duo prides itself in curating innovative concert programming that appeals to audiences beyond the traditional classical spectrum.
Award-winning flutist Jiajia Li is currently an extra player with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and a flute instructor at Mount Royal University Conservatory. A virtuosic soloist, Jiajia has recently appeared on stage at the ‘Calgary New Music Festival’ and ‘The Works’ Art & Design Festival in Edmonton, and as guest soloist with Kensington Sinfonia. Jiajia is passionate about chamber music and plays regularly with ensembles such as Timepoint Ensemble (Calgary), Seurat Trio (New York) and Jiajia and Marcos (Frankfurt).  She earned her Master’s degree at Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt in Germany.
Elisabeth Desruisseaux is a soloist, collaborative pianist and music educator based in Calgary. As the director of the piano program at a Calgary music school, she maintains an active teaching schedule, while also adjudicating festivals, providing masterclasses, and performing regularly in faculty recitals. As a performer, Elisabeth has worked as a collaborative pianist in both Canada and the UK.
About the program: Censored!
Forced into hiding, fleeing the continent, their loved ones lost, their lives cut short, the persecuted composers of World War II still produced music of incredible beauty and emotional force. Featuring four such composers—Erwin Schulhoff, Rosy Wertheim, Mieczyslaw Weinberg and Bohuslav Martinu—this concert shows the power of the human spirit in the context of wartime anti-Semitism.
Optimistic liveliness, deep melancholy, and fantastical escapes are all underlined by the creativity of these brilliant minds.
Join Impasto Duo in celebrating the lives and music of these censored composers!

This concert is the fourth in a series of five Distinctive Performers concerts during 2018 generously sponsored by:
