Blackburn-1199A native of Campbell River, British Columbia, Matthew Blackburn has performed across Canada from Victoria, British Columbia to St. Johnʼs, Newfoundland.

Winner of the Lethbridge Symphonyʼs Young Artist Competition in 2009, Matthew had his orchestral debut performing Prokofievʼs Second Piano Concerto later that year. He has performed in numerous festivals, including Calgaryʼs Mountain View Festival, St. Johnʼs Tuckamore, the Kelowna Pianoforte Festival, the Fort Macleod International Festival, and Academie Musicale Internationale, Vaison-la-Romaine, France.

Other notable performances include those with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Landʼs End Chamber Ensemble, Lily String Quartet, and Musaeus String Quartet.

Equally at home with a variety of repertoire, Matthew has given several world premieres and is an avid proponent of new music. From Bach and Beethoven to Hétu and Andronikou, Matthew’s performances are consistently met with enthusiastic reception.

In 2012 Matthew obtained a Master of Music degree from the University of Calgary, where he studied with Charles Foreman and Marilyn Engle. He holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Lethbridge and associate diplomas from the Royal Conservatory of Music and the Victoria Conservatory of Music.

In the fall of 2014 Matthew will be continuing his studies at Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris.
