Expect some hard-swinging and sweet-sounding music by the likes of George Gershwin, Oscar Peterson, Irving Berlin, J.S Bach and the Beatles.
What does a sax quartet sound like? Listeners have likened the experience of hearing a quartet of saxophones to the shimmering of heavenly strings. Others says it reminds them of a pipe organ or even a funk-rock band. Clearly, there’s something for everyone in the sound.
The Saxsons brings together the talents of four experienced sax men in Calgary; Frank Rackow (soprano), guest artist Gerry Hebert (alto), Shane Statz (tenor) and Gareth Bane (baritone).
Frank Rackow (soprano sax)
A performer, educator and music director, Frank has recorded, toured and performed in various parts of Canada with jazz, folk, pop and world music artists. Frank also works as a freelance broadcaster with the CBC.
Gerry Hebert (special guest on alto sax)
Gerry Hebert has been playing saxophone for over 30 years and is a dedicated musician and educator who owns and operates The Jazz Edge Corporation.
Shane Statz (tenor sax)
Shane Statz has been a member and arranger of the Calgary Jazz Orchestra since 2005. Shane also teaches for and directs the Anacrusis Music school
Gareth Bane (baritone sax)
A blend of jazz, R&B and funk shape the concept of Gareth Bane’s powerful sound and approach to music. Influences as diverse as Nick Brignola, Ralph Bowen and Tower of Power have solidified into his appealing concept and approach to jazz.
