“Music as Puppetry” is a whimsical, all-ages mask, music and movement collaboration between Dance Artist Jocelyn Mah and Violinist/Composer James Watson, using their joint vocabulary of contemporary and folk/jazz idioms.
In this noon hour performance, Marionette Doll “Violon” gains autonomy and tries to break free from the command of the Puppet Maestro. Join us on our fanciful, music-filled journey!
Created by Jocelyn Mah and James Watson
Jocelyn Mah is a contemporary dance artist by training, but always knew her practice would expand to include more than that. Now also a puppeteer, mask performer and avid interdisciplinary collaborator, her work weaves exaggerated fictional characters, grotesque imagery, and (often live) music into eccentric feminist tapestries, all in the name of unbridled artistic expression.
Since completing his Bachelor of Music (minor in linguistics), James Watson is a full-time freelance member of Calgary’s music community, working as a teacher, mentor, composer, recording, and performing artist, with new roles lurking around every corner.
This concert is a proud Community Co-presentation with Calgary’s Festival of Animated Objects
