Spanish Duo – Spanish inspired music for guitar and cello

imagesKirill Kalmykov (cello) and Brad Mahon (guitar) met and first played together as graduate students attending the University of Calgary. Their professional relationship has continued as colleagues at Mount Royal University’s Conservatory and resulted in this rare program of Spanish and Spanish-inspired music for guitar and cello.

Brad MahonA past-winner in the Pacific Northwest Guitar Competition, Brad Mahon has appeared throughout Portugal, the United States, and across his native Canada, as an award-winning and acclaimed guitarist, educator, adjudicator, clinician, and lecturer. He is currently the Head of the Conservatory of Performing Arts at the University of Regina and maintains part-time roles with Mount Royal University and the Royal Conservatory of Music. Additionally, Brad tours and records with the Oberon Guitar Trio, East West Guitar Duo, as a collaborative artist, and soloist, and has written for Music Matters, Soundboard, Fast Forward, and Guitar Connoisseur.

Kirill KalmykovBorn in St. Petersburg, Russian-Canadian cellist Kirill Kalmykov is equally at ease as a recitalist, orchestra musician and pedagogue. Having performed since 1987 and being praised for his expressive style and thoughtful interpretations, Mr. Kalmykov has appeared throughout the former USSR, Europe, Latin America, Canada and the United States. Mr. Kalmykov is on faculty at the Mount Royal University Conservatory where he teaches cello and chamber music.

About the Program:

Cantos de España is a rare program and is a collaboration of Calgary’s own classical guitarist Brad Mahon and cellist Kirill Kalmykov. Performing many traditional favourites by de Falla, Albéniz and Granados, this unique duo will also share the lesser known works by Joaquín Rodrigo and Joaquín Nin, and will certainly make you feel the passion and pain of the Spanish soul.

This concert is the fifth and final presentation in a series of World Music Concerts being presented during 2015 by ProArts@Noon Concert Series, and is generously sponsored by the:
