The Calgary Fiddlers’ performances burst with high-energy music and youthful exuberance, taking audiences on a vibrant journey through a wide range of musical genres — from Bluegrass and Big Band to Celtic, Contemporary, Jazz, and Swing. Each show is a fun, dynamic performance where clever choreography brings the music to life, and solo features highlight the individual talents within the group. The program goes beyond the fiddle, incorporating flute, bodhrán, and dance, with engaging introductions that make every piece entertaining and accessible. Dressed in iconic Calgary costuming that celebrates both the city’s cowboy roots and its Celtic namesake through the signature Calgary Tartan, the ensemble captivates with charm, charisma, and remarkable musical excellence—all performed without a conductor, showcasing the group’s exceptional unity and artistry.
The enthusiasm and energy of youth mixed with the precision of highly trained and musically gifted talent is what has set the Calgary Fiddlers apart from other youth groups across the globe for 38 years. Their extraordinary musicianship, choreography and interactive performances have left a lasting impact on communities around the world. These fifteen amazing musicians are backed up with percussion, strong vocals, mandolin, upright bass and accordion while offering a unique fiddle fusion of traditional folk fiddle, country, bluegrass, Celtic, contemporary and big band genres.
Since the formation of The Calgary Fiddlers in 1981, this highly skilled group of amateur musicians, ranging from 13 to 18 years of age, has performed for live audiences and television & radio broadcasts. Over the years, the group has toured extensively throughout Spain, France, Scotland, Ireland, and the USA. In the summer of 2017, they had the honour of performing daily for over 10,000 people at the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo in Halifax. This past year, the Calgary Fiddlers had the pleasure of performing as part of the UNESCO summer music festivals in Sicily, Italy and Valletta, Malta.
In addition to a very busy performance schedule in and around Calgary, members of the Calgary Fiddlers benefit from cultural opportunities and interpersonal skills development through increased confidence, leadership, team building, discipline, communication, stress and time management. As well, they are exposed to several unique experiences typically available only to professional musicians, such as recording projects, television and radio broadcasts, touring (locally, nationally, and internationally) and performing with other professional musicians such as Mark O’Connor, Ashley MacIsaac, the National Arts Center Orchestra and more.
