With a history spanning over two millennia, Guzheng, a traditional Chinese plucked string instrument has evolved from its ancient seven-string form to the modern 21-string version. Rooted in the pentatonic scale, the Guzheng can produce a vast range of melodies through the player’s nuanced control of string tension, transcending time and cultural boundaries.
Founded and led by experienced Guzheng instructor Shirley Wong, the Harmony Guzheng Ensemble has been actively promoting Guzheng art in community cultural activities since its establishment in 2008. Next year, the ensemble will celebrate its 19th anniversary with nearly 30 members, and is scheduled to hold its 19th Anniversary Concert on May 23, 2027, at the Bella Concert Hall of Mount Royal University.
The concert program features a diverse selection of traditional folk music and modern innovative works, showcasing the Guzheng’s remarkable artistic expressiveness. “Butterfly Lovers” tells the legendary love story of two ill-fated lovers through its poignant melody, highlighting the instrument’s narrative power. “Jasmine Flower”, a classic folk piece, conveys the gentle elegance of the Southern water towns. “Cloud Palace Swift Sound” blends modern rhythms with traditional pentatonic scales, transporting listeners to the boundary between myth and reality. ProArts Music Organization looks forward to sharing this eastern musical beauty with you, inviting you to experience the unique charm of Guzheng art.
