Tre Amici, Tre Corde (three friends, three strings) is Calgary’s newest and hottest Classical string trio. Edward Powell, Lev Nesterov and Osmond Chiu – three young professionals all trained in Calgary – join their two energetic violins and lively viola in an exhilarating programme of rarely-performed late Romantic and 20th-Century Russian and Hungarian works.
Prokofiev’s dramatic Sonata For Two Violins is framed by two highly contrasting string trios: Taneyev’s whimsically elegant Trio in D major Opus 21, and the thrilling, virtuosic finale from Kodàly’s folk-inspired Serenade for Two Violins and Viola, Op. 12. Come and be surprised by the energy and joie-de-vivre of this exciting new group and its daring and unusual repertoire!
Violinist Edward Powell, an alumnus of the ProMusica Society (YADP), Mount Royal Conservatory Academy, and Amici String Programme, is a student of Donovan Seidle, winner of the Calgary C3 (Elgar) and Frank Simpson concerto competitions (Elgar, Beethoven), and recipient of the 2014 Calgary Youth Orchestra Frank Simpson Memorial Scholarship for his outstanding contribution as Concertmaster. Currently performing with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Edward was awarded his ARCT Performance Diploma with First Class Honours with Distinction in 2013, and will begin B. Mus studies in September 2015 with Kai Gleusteen at the Liceu Conservatory in Barcelona, Spain.
Lev Nesterov is a Violin Performance B. Mus. major at the University of Calgary, under Edmond Agopian and Joan Barrett. An alumnus of Mount Royal Conservatory Academy, Lev has performed as soloist with the Calgary Philharmonic, Edmonton Symphony and U. of C. orchestras as First Prize winner of the 2013 RBC Concerto Competition. Concertmaster of the Calgary Youth Orchestra and U. of C. Orchestra, and member of the U. of C. String Quartet since 2013, Lev is also first violinist with the Volante String Quartet, and has performed at the National Arts Centre, Ottawa, Banff Centre for the Arts, and Morningside Music Bridge in Shanghai, China.
Osmond Chiu began viola studies aged eight, his development being principally guided by Theresa Plotnick and Nick Pulos. An alumnus of the Mount Royal Conservatory Academy, Osmond toured Austria, the Czech Republic and France with the Calgary Youth Orchestra. He participated in the NAC Young Artists Program under Pinchas Zukerman, the Valhalla Summer School of Music, and the Mountain View International Festival of Song and Chamber Music with Anton Kuerti and Rudolf Jansen. Osmond particularly enjoys chamber music and collaborating with vocalists, and is pursuing a double degree in Music Performance and Accounting at the University of Calgary, under Dean O’Brien.
