Ruthie Purves Smith, a seasoned artist, author, and singer-songwriter, has had a remarkable journey in the music world. Born and raised in Calgary, Ruthie had a unique upbringing. Her family ran an 1800’s Wool Mill, which her parents started in the 1970s. The mill, now managed by her sister, spun rich tapestries of creativity, much like Ruth’s musical journey.
Ruthie received her first guitar in fifth grade, a Classical Espana, which accompanied her across the world, around campfires, and on horseback journeys. It has since been restored and remains cherished within her family. Her rural life in Swalwell, Alberta, fueled her passion for songwriting and storytelling. She found a sense of belonging in this tight-knit community.
Ruth’s music spans genres, from country to Celtic-infused folk rock.
She released her debut album, licenced to MTV and # 69 on CKUA’s Top 100, in 2010, followed by her second in 2016. Her third album, featuring all original songs, was released in late 2024 to much critical acclaim. It just topped out on the RMR charts at #6 on the Americana Country album chart. (5 spots behind Willie Nelson!)
Ruthie’s live performances are captivating. Having toured extensively, she honed her craft while touring North America and Europe.
Her compelling lyrics and restless, rhythmic sound resonate with audiences. Ruth Purves Smith’s life has been a symphony of creativity, resilience, and heartfelt melodies.
