Hello Moth creates abstract synth-pop by night, ambient explosions by day. Their live show has taken them across Canada, into the USA, and overseas to 6 European countries. Recognized by CBC as “the kind of innovative music-making that keeps the future of Canadian music looking bright,” Moth’s style blends electronic tones with folk influences to create a sound somewhere between soil and sky. Their latest release, birds on wires, is a mostly instrumental micro album of mid-fi beats and ambiences “characteristic of what makes Hello Moth so unassuming yet intriguing, both dead simple and entirely left field” (IDIE:YOUDIE, 2022).
Today, Hello Moth is joined by Darren Young on guitar for a special duo performance composed of freshly sprouted songs, reimagined selections from Moth’s catalog, and a time capsule from the Renaissance.
Multi-instrumentalist, composer, sound designer, music director, and educator Darren Young is an exciting artist with a diverse palette. He has been a featured performer with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, New Music Edmonton, New Works Calgary, Kensington Sinfonia, Instrumental Society of Calgary, and Theatre Calgary. His most recent composition, sound design for the art installation “Impossible Geometries” (AZMA Digital) can currently be heard in THEMUSEUM in Kitchener, ON. In 2022, Darren premiered a work in collaboration with dance soloist Alèn Martel as part of “SHED | knowing each other as different and the same” (Pam Tzeng, Dancers’ Studio West) in Chinatown, Calgary, AB.
