Oberon Guitar Trio

Formed in 2007, the Oberon Guitar Trio—Mahon, Murray Visscher, and Ralph Maier—have quickly become one of Canada’s most recognizable ensembles enjoying radio play on both Canadian and American public radio.

Classical Guitar magazine (UK) reviewed their debut recording affirming: “The Oberon Guitar Trio prove themselves to be a highly competent trio who blend extremely well together in ensemble. Scattered throughout these excellent compositions are moments of high drama and excitement alongside passages of pathos and charm, all emotions with which the trio handle with ease and a good sense of musicianship.”

They have appeared as featured artists at the Northwest Guitar Festival, MusicFest Vancouver, and GuitarFestWest; as part of university/college concert series including the College of the Rockies, University of Calgary, Victoria Conservatory, and Mount Royal University; and from the recital halls in large metropolitan areas like Edmonton, to the venues of smaller centres such as the mountain cities of Castlegar and Kaslo.

The group is committed to performing pieces written specifically for the guitar trio genre, with a focus on new and commissioned works. Compositions written for and premiered by the trio include creations by John Abram (England), Michalis Andronikou (Greece), William Beauvais (Canada), Michael Nicolella (USA), Pascal Sasseville Quoquochi (Canada), and Mark Wilson (USA)—some of which will be featured on their forthcoming CD, Music of the Earth (2017).
