PATIO SET

The Patio Set was founded in the summer of 2020, when musical performances were shut down, due to Covid. Nevertheless, an intrepid group of musicians from the Calgary Wind Symphony decided to form a chamber group of mixed winds and piano (and the occasional string player!) so we could safely bring music to whoever needed some live music in their lives. We played on patios, porches, in parks, driveways, and on sidewalks. We had tons of fun.

Today’s performers are Terri Shouldice and Rose Schmaltz, flutes and Julie Jacques piano. Collectively they have decades of performing, teaching and coaching experience!! Their concert will feature some very diverse music for 2 flutes and piano-and there’s lots to explore, we assure you!

Terri is a 4th generation native Calgarian who has been studying music and playing her entire life, first on the piano and later on the flute. Terri holds a BMus from the University of Calgary, has been a member of the Calgary Wind Symphony for 45 years and is the current concert master, a position she has held for over 15 years. She additionally has extensive experience playing flute and piccolo in many groups in the city, such as the Rocky Mountain Symphony Orchestra, Alberta Winds, Calgary Civic Symphony and in the Front Row Centre Players. She shares her passion for the flute with young players, teaching clinics in the school system and on the stage in chamber ensembles. Additional passions are her grandsons, reading and long walks.

Rose is also a frequent participant in many organizations around the city. As well as being a 15 year member of the Calgary Wind Symphony, she has diverse musical experiences in the Front Row CentrePlayers, Rocky Mountain Symphony Orchestra, and the FCC Jazz Flute Big Band. She holds a BSc. In Chemistry, (Music Minor) and her most recent accomplishment is the completion of her grade 10 Flute certificate, from the Royal Conservatory of Music. She also teaches at the Chinook School of Music. Her students are consistently awarded high marks in festivals and exams, and are successful auditionees for further education.

Julie is originally from Sarnia Ontario but came to Calgary for her two degrees in Music, Performance and Musicology. She has been a collaborative pianist (aka ‘accompanist’) in Calgary for over 50 years, playing for whatever ‘draws breath or bow’ She has partnered both professionals and students for recitals, masterclass, auditions and competitions. Her chamber music repertoire is in the hundreds. Her motto is ‘Notes to learn, pages to turn’.

Julie also plays in the Calgary Wind Symphony, primarily as a French horn player but also is their principal keyboardist and is one of their concert managers. When not practising something or other, Julie is busy playing bridge, quilting and rose gardening.
